Proposals for Entry Drafting
Proposals for drafting encyclopedia entries may be sent to lgnn@sns.it.
Entries may be written in Italian, English, French, German, or Spanish.
All entries are subject to a process of double-blind peer review.
Editorial Guidelines for the Body of the Entries
Font format
Italics should be limited to: quotations and Latin expressions; transliterations from Greek; terms and short expressions in a language different from that of the entry; dialectal terms. Any quotations or expressions in Greek or in other ancient or modern languages not using the Latin alphabet should instead appear in roman type.
Bold is reserved exclusively for the citation of the lemma being discussed, to be indicated by the initial letter of the Greek word, without diacritics. Example: for the entry hormos (ὅρμος, ὁ), the term will appear in the body of the text as o.
Diacritical Marks
Double low quotation marks (« ») should be used for definitions, word or passage quotations, and translations.
Double high quotation marks (“ ”) are used only for quotations within a primary quotation.
Single quotation marks (‘ ’) should be limited to cases where a term is emphasized or used in a sense different from its common meaning.
The en dash (–) should be used for parenthetical clauses.
The hyphen (-) should be used for precise numerical ranges (e.g., 431-04 BC; Ianni 1996, 112-22).
The em dash (—) should never be used.
The slash (/) should indicate uncertain chronologies (e.g., 5th/4th century BC).
Modern Topography
When referring to modern places and sites, use the current toponym in the language of the contribution.
Ancient Onomastics and Topography
The author may use either transliteration or translation, provided consistency is maintained throughout the entry.
Numbers and Dates
Numbers should preferably be written out in words, except for statistical or quantitative data. Examples: three banks of oars; 55%; 42 km.
Dates should be given in the most concise form possible (e.g., 333/2 BC but 320/19 BC).
Modern Scholarship
For modern authors, use the author-date system. In the case of multiple authors, separate surnames with a comma. Page or column references should be given in the most concise form, without p./pp. or col./coll., etc. Examples: Casson 1971, 77-8, 97-101; Morrison, Coates 1986, 180-91.
Ancient Sources
For Greek and Latin literary sources, use the abbreviations from OCD and ThlL, respectively, in the following format: author (roman type) work (italic) passage number (book, chapter, and paragraph divisions separated by periods, with no spaces).

For Greek epigraphic sources, follow the AIEGL abbreviations, for Latin epigraphic sources, use AE abbreviations. Format: abbreviation of the collection (roman/italic as per catalog standards) volume number (Roman numerals) issue number (Arabic numerals, separated from the volume by a period and no spaces) inscription number (Arabic numerals, preceded by a space), and any line/column indications (preceded by a comma and abbreviations l./ll., col./coll.).

Bibliographic Standards
Journal Abbreviations
For journal titles, follow the abbreviations used in Année Philologique (Aph).
Place of Publication
In bibliographic references, use place names in their original language.
Translations, Later Editions, Reprints
For translated works, follow the original edition with trad. / trans. / Übs. and include the translator’s name and year of publication.
For later editions, indicate the edition number as a superscript after the publication date. If citing the date of the first edition, place it in parentheses. For reprints, give place and year of the reprint in parentheses.
Online Publications
Provide the address in angle brackets (< >) followed by the date of last consultation in parentheses.
Example: <https://gei.sns.it/search/document/GEI002> (27/10/2025).
